The Unexpected Happens

We dream and plan,
create our vision — yet,
like a squabble of seagulls,
it can all scatter
in the cacophony of life.

The unexpected happens,
health changes, deaths occur,
we feel the injustice, all the while
knowing there is nothing that meets
our idea of what is just.

From this we create a new vision,
an awakened awareness of
what is possible, NOW.
Then, in the next moment,
change again occurs.

This is our constant — change.
We, who await a stable
ground beneath our feet,
must seek to be moored from within.
A depth of stillness, our pole star.

“Within yourself is a stillness and a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time and be yourself.”

Herman Hesse

“There will always be ripples. The important thing is the stillness between the ripples. We should always strive to achieve that stillness.”

Udayakumar DS, Life of a Sunset Kid

“The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.”

Albert Einstein

The Vast Inner Landscape

Walking on the beach, I look up to see eighteen pelicans flying in a straight-line formation, heading north. Suddenly, the fifteenth breaks out and heads east over the Atlantic. Two behind begin to follow, then hesitate, think better of it, and maneuver their way back in line. The lone rogue pelican heads out over the ocean, away from the flock. What is it this one is wanting? Is it merely a last look? Not feeling ready to follow? Or maybe this one is longing for something more or desiring to be alone away from this formation that is so familiar.

Watching, I recognize myself. The feeling that being alone is just right. The peace of it, the quiet simplicity of my own thoughts, dreams, and desires. The time to become familiar with my own inner landscape in this vast ocean of life. Then, when ready, connecting with a deep inner need to belong, I return.

“I restore mysel when I am alone.”

Marilyn Monroe

“Solitude vivifies, isolation kills.”

Joseph Roux

“Loneliness is the poverty of self; solitude is the richness of self.”

May Sarton

Remembering Anhinga

After traveling for 33 days and nights my body and mind seek rest.

Drink water.
Sit still.
Eat light.

Remember, my dear, the Anhinga who, after diving for her food, rested on the branch, wings unfurled, letting herself air dry in the sun’s rays, watching the world around her, waiting in quiet confidence for all that will unfold, listening for her body’s needs before moving forward.

“we are all made of water.
it’s okay to rage. sometimes
it’s okay to rest. to recede.”

Sanober Kahn, A Thousand Flamingos

“The most valuable thing we can do for the psyche, occasionally, is to let it rest, wander, live in the changing light of room, not try to be or do anything whatever.”

May Sarton

“As important as it is to have a plan for doing work, it is perhaps more important to have a plan for rest, relaxation, self-care, and sleep.”

The Ocean

sounds of ocean roar
on crystal beach —
hearts in repose

“She loves the serene brutality of the ocean, loves the electric power she felt with each breath of wet, briny air.”

Holly Black, Tithe

“It is my favorite thing, I think, that I have ever seen. Sometimes I catch myself staring at it and forget my duties. It seems big enough to contain everything anyone could ever feel.”

Anthony Doerr, All The Light We Cannot See

If
the ocean
can calm itself,
so can you.
we
are both
salt water
mixed with
air.”

Nayyirah Waheed
