Art Exhibition

Runs through August 31, 2023

The One World series of paintings and written reflections in poetry and prose depict the inner images of the artist from early 2020 through 2022 — the start of the pandemic through the George Floyd murder, civil unrest, political upheaval, and the war in Ukraine.

All art works are for sale as well as greeting cards made from the images. Please contact me for more information on purchase.

The gallery is open most M-F from 9-3 but call Wisdom Ways for further times during evenings and weekends. 651-696-2794

Resting Under the Sun

In summer,
I rest under the sun,
enticed by the open road.

I look at the calendar before me and see empty space. There is nothing written, noted, scheduled. One week. Something I have not seen for over three months. I feel tired in body, relief for the space ahead, joy in all that has been worked towards in these past weeks, months. It is an open road, if only a short one, but I will take it. Space to be, to reflect, to rest, inviting curiosity for what will unfold.

“Map out your future, but do it in pencil. The road ahead is as long as you make it. Make it worth the trip.”

Jon Bon Jovi

“I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I intended to be.”

Douglas Adams

“The road is there. It will always be there. You just have to decide when to take it.”

The Joy of Being You

We are all told
From child to adult,
To smell better,
Smile more,
Have whiter teeth,
Be better, be more,
To change.

To add or subtract,
To be more or less,
As you are too much,
Or not enough.
The airwaves filled,
Opinion upon opinion,
Of whom you are, until—
You no longer know your you.

Where do you look?
If not inside,
To find the courage
To be who you are,
To shine a light
On the messages stored,
Keeping you stuck in life,
Betraying
 the “me”
that once you knew.

The simple joy of being,
Before dropped in a stew
Of other’s declaring
Who you are to be,
What you are to do.
All you are,
is there in you,
as you already know your you.

Living in Nature

We awoke to carnage—
Watering can tossed,
Plant uprooted and flattened,
Birdseed emptied below,
Robins nest lying on the ground,
Downy soft feathers scattered.

The night vision camera
Showed racoon blundering about,
Then standing erect on the railing
As in a lineup for the accused.
Now we see you, we said —
Then sighed in our distress.

Feeling sadness for Mother Robin,
Frustration with clean-up and loss,
Disgust at the calling card left on the stairs,
Our distress, I saw, was Racoon being Racoon.
As useless as shouting at the wind.
It is we who must adapt.

Joy in Abundance

Sitting in the chair facing the garden where the birdbath was nestled into the Asiatic lilies, Sedum, and kitchen herbs, I listened to a book on tape while my eyes focused on the scene before me. I watched Robin splash with abandon, wings lifting and flinging the water into the air then showering down upon his head. I laughed as he could not get enough on this unseasonably hot spring evening. When he flew away, his partner showed up splashing to her hearts content; back and forth they went, one after the other. I watched for an hour as Blue Jay inserted himself when he could, competing for the highest splashes, and trading off with his partner as well.

I glanced down at my phone deciding to check the news feed and read the headline, “Phoenix area can’t meet groundwater demands over the next century.” I looked back up at Robin delighting in fresh water, cooling, drinking, bathing to his hearts content. The paradox was not lost on me, the yin and yang, joy and sadness, abundance and lack in this one moment, one feeding the other, different and the same. Sitting in the silence of awareness with playfulness before me, feeling joy and sadness, love and fear.

“Life is strong and fragile. It’s a paradox… It’s both things, like quantum physics: It’s a particle and a wave at the same time. It all exists all together.”

Joan Jett

“In contradiction and paradox, you can find truth.”

Denis Villeneuve

“That’s the great paradox of living on this earth, that in the midst of great pain you can have great joy as well. If we didn’t have those things, we’d just be numb.”

Kathy Mattea
