The Light We Shine

Winter Solstice arrives,
we breathe a sigh,
light returns,
measured in seconds
until, once again, we
feel the joy
of illumination.

This season sings
of radiance,
candles are lit,
twinkle lights abound,
menorah, manger,
sun, all symbols for
our fascination.

Opening doors
hearts,
we find the light,
hidden within
all along, now bidden,
we are never without,
our true celebration.

A re-blog from Dec. 2022.

May we breathe peace into chaos, may we enjoy harmony in our encounters. Wishing us all joy in our days and serenity in our nights. May every day be seen as holy as we radiate light into this world.

Blessings and love,

Janis

An Ending/A Beginning

Looking back through
a year coming to end,
we take stock and look,
try to comprehend.

Watching from afar,
a war waged,
lives wasted,
we feel enraged.

Inflation burning,
food instability,
families’ uncertainty,
threatens sustainability.

When now we end,
we now begin,
take what we learned
to come out of our spin.

We speak of love,
faith and hope,
at times hard to accept,
but within our scope.

We look and see the love
shared in family, friend,
community, the dove
of peace that does not end.

I do believe
we are that good,
we have the ability
to be understood.

We look deep within,
to enlarge our heart,
then rise to accept
and do our part.

We ring in the new,
learn from the pain,
in opening our arms,
find the freedom we gain.

Happy New Year to all, 2023!

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today, I am wise, so I am changing myself.”

Rumi

“Years end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on.”

Hal Borland

“And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been.”

A Dinner Party for Eight

A Love Celebration
The dinner was black tie,
our own interpretation,
with imagination,
exceptional, she said.

John arrived with a work glove
tucked in his shirt,
Peter a paper top hat,
a bow tie and vest.

Couples in youth, bending
toward then, celebrate
now; love, romance,
friendship – sacrament – we said.

A crown roast centered the table
with little white hats for the bones.
We blessed our meal, toasted our hosts,
and dined with heart to our fill.

Post dinner entertainment
brought the women to sing.
The men went out to the porch
to work up their routine.

What I remember after,
was laughter,
a flash, and
the glow of four moons.

“A smile starts on the lips, a grin spreads to the eyes, a chuckle comes from the belly; but a good laugh bursts forth from the soul, overflows, and bubbles all around.”

Carolyn Birmingham

In the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.

Khalil Gibran

Each friend represents a world in us, a world not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.

Anais Nin

May the love and laughter that is in our hearts today overflow from within us and spread throughout the world like a wildfire, blessing all in its path. May we each know even a moment of loving kindness.
