I Saw Her

I saw her,
early in the morning,
when most were sleeping.
She was standing at the water’s edge,
arms spread wide as if inviting into
her being all the energy the ocean offered.

She saw me,
later in the afternoon,
as I walked past her family
playing and resting on the sand and
I smiled at a little girl walking,
carrying a large scoop of sand.

She told me,
later, as I walked past her,
standing at the water’s edge with open arms.
She said, “You have good energy.”
I saw you earlier, your smile, it is beautiful.”
I paused in front of her, thanked her for her kindness.

I felt wonder,
in the recognition of each other. The simplicity
of connecting with another human on a heart level.
The gift given to a stranger. The confidence to speak.
A moment that was too soon gone as,
with nothing more to say, we each walked on our way.

“Life is a collection of moments. Mindfulness is beautification of the moments.”

Amit Ray, Mindfulness Living in the Moment

“There’s beauty everywhere. There are amazing things happening everywhere, you just have to be able to open your eyes and witness it. Some days, that’s harder than others.”

Sarah McLachlan

“My witness is the empty sky.”

Jack Kerouac

Seeking The Sun

We drive for days past ice and snow,
frozen earth, grey skies, wind, and rain,
bustling traffic, lack of sleep, noisy hotels.
We drive with laughter, music, and road food
until we find sandy beaches, warm air, sunshine.

Without our own laughter, would we see the light?
Without our own joy would we acknowledge the
grace of water and sand? Without awaking to
our own shadow would we find our way on
as we venture home through the night?

Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.”

Anthony J. D’Angelo

“A good laugh is sunshine in the house.”

William Makepeace Thackeray

“A day without sunshine is like, you know, night.”

Steve Martin

The Sacred Moments of Living

Art by Jean Crocker

There are times when what is considered sacred appears in a bold pronounced manner. This week, THAT which I will call SHE appeared most prominently in soft spaces, the flow of awareness, deep and simple quiet. What I found each day was a gentle presence as I waded through feet of snow to the compost bin, the laughter as I fell, the way the crisp air touched my cheeks, my face reaching for the touch of sun. SHE was in the rhythm of chopping onions for the chili, tears dropping from my eyes, salt slipping through my fingers, the sizzle of olive oil. I touched Her while sorting through items for the donation bin and remembering past days, then when I stretched to open my body. SHE was seen as I gazed through the window to observe the Cardinal dressed in her beckoning red while perched on a mound of fresh snow, then surprised me as the lone deer who walked past, so close to the corner of the house, I thought I would hear knocking at my door. Days filled with witnessing life. Touching, seeing, smelling, hearing, tasting. My heart filled with the peace of it, the noticing of it—the sacred moments of living.

“We have been blessed with the privilege to live life. May we live to the fullness.”
― Lailah Gifty Akita, Pearls of Wisdom: Great mind

“The breeze is nothing but kisses
blown to us by the universe
to tickle the remembrance
of the love for being alive”
― Valentina Quarta, The Purpose Ladder

“You know, it is one of the most marvelous things in life to discover something unexpectedly, spontaneously, to come upon something without premeditation, and instantly to see the beauty, the sacredness, the reality of it. But a mind that is seeking and wanting to find is never in that position at all.”
― Jiddu Krishnamurti, On God

Lightening The Load

Whenever I feel the weight of the world pressing down,
determined to take peace from my heart,
I walk from room to room, looking, opening, factoring
what is not needed here, not used, beyond usefulness,
now taking my joy. As doors open and close, memories and
regrets emerge but with nothing new to learn they are tossed,
losses grieved. This I determine to keep, that I need more time to decide.
I breathe in the freedom of space. As compartments open and close,
dreams held, desires sought, arise like butterflies seeking life
from a dark cocoon. Not all live, not all see the light of day.
In this, I find the luxury of ease, knowing freedom through open hands.
Allowing now the peace of my heart, the stillness of my soul.
The simple elegance of walking with a light load.

“Clutter smothers. Simplicity breathes.”

Terry Guillemets

“The outer world is a reflection of the inner world. Other people’s perception of you is a reflection of them; your response to them is an awareness of you.”

Roy T. Bennett

“If there is light in the soul, there will be beauty in the person. If there is beauty in the person, there will be harmony in the house. If there is harmony in the house, there will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.”

A Song of Lamentation

Sky Lights by Janis Dehler
May I know peace
Deep within my heart
Feeling you are there
Guiding me along
Gentle in your care.

May we all know peace
Deep within our hearts
Feeling you are there
Guiding us along
Gentle in your care.

May we end our wars
Open to your love
Deep within our hearts
Guiding us along
Gentle in our care.

May we see all beings
As we are all one
Shining all within
Deep within our hearts
Guiding us along.

May we all know peace
Deep within our hearts
Seeing you and me
Beings that we are
Wanting only love.

Wanting only peace
Being who we are.

“Do not let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace.”

Dalai Lama

“Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset.”

Saint Francis de Sales

“Don’t search for anything except peace. Try to calm the mind. Everything else will come on its own.”

Baba Hari Das

An Ending/A Beginning

Looking back through
a year coming to end,
we take stock and look,
try to comprehend.

Watching from afar,
a war waged,
lives wasted,
we feel enraged.

Inflation burning,
food instability,
families’ uncertainty,
threatens sustainability.

When now we end,
we now begin,
take what we learned
to come out of our spin.

We speak of love,
faith and hope,
at times hard to accept,
but within our scope.

We look and see the love
shared in family, friend,
community, the dove
of peace that does not end.

I do believe
we are that good,
we have the ability
to be understood.

We look deep within,
to enlarge our heart,
then rise to accept
and do our part.

We ring in the new,
learn from the pain,
in opening our arms,
find the freedom we gain.

Happy New Year to all, 2023!

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today, I am wise, so I am changing myself.”

Rumi

“Years end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on.”

Hal Borland

“And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been.”

The Light We Shine

Winter Solstice arrives,
we breathe a sigh,
          light returns,
measured in seconds
until, once again, we
feel the joy
         of illumination.

This season sings
of radiance,
          candles are lit,
twinkle lights abound,
menorah, manger,
sun, all symbols for
	  our fascination.

Opening the door
of our hearts,
          we find the light,
hidden within
all along, now bidden,
we are never without,
          our true celebration.

May we breathe peace into chaos, may we enjoy harmony in our encounters. Wishing us all joy in our days and serenity in our nights. May every day be seen as holy as we radiate light into this world.

Blessings and love,

Janis

The Sounds of Silence

The pleasure of
this day is found

doing laundry
reading a book

a cup of tea
without conversation

filled with the sound
of life’s orchestra

a washing machine
the twitter of bird

a car passing by
sounds of silence

allowing my mind
to rest in a field

a peaceful wave
a gentle drift

a return to the
soul of self

the center of being
in body

in this day.

“I have learned silence from the talkative, tolerance from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet, strange, I am ungrateful to those teachers.”

Khalil Gibran

“Everything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learn, whatever state I may be in, therein to be content.”

Helen Keller

“The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls and whispered in the sounds of silence.”

Paul Simon

The Storm

A flash of lightening
the crack of thunder
over and over
as night inches to dawn
the rain pours
I lay still and breathe
with each boom
focus on breath
pray my mantra
clear my mind
as nature reflects
all that transpires
in the disjointed
flow of this week
not wanting to think
of all that needs doing
when the sun rises
then I roll over
drifting slowly
ever so gently
to peace

“Another secret of the universe: Sometimes pain was like a storm that came out of nowhere. The clearest summer could end in a downpour. Could end in lightning and thunder.”

Benjamin Alire Sáenz, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.

“When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.”

Haruki Murakami, Kafka on the Shore

“There is peace even in the storm”

Vincent van Gogh, The Letters of Vincent van Gogh

Morning’s Grace

Cedar Lake August 2022
Paddling through cloud reflections,
trees mirrored on the lake,
I listen as water laps against my paddle,
voices arise from camp, as all awake.

Watching grasses floating below,
a kayaker making her way along the shore,
I observe the trees along the lakeside,
captured in stillness as I explore.

Closing my eyes as a water skier casts waves,
rocking my vessel, soothing my soul,
I feel calm in this cradle of peace,
realm of sky and water, now to console.

Smiling, two loons arrive, dunking heads,
ruffling feathers, diving, resurfacing, near to my craft.
I reflect on ease and grace as they move,
as if they dance in abandon to make me laugh.

Offering thanks for trust in my presence of beauty manifest,
I rest in community; one they so freely adorn.
I receive communion in my attendance of the sacred,
in this moment, this sacrament, on this—a Sunday morn.

Loons on Cedar Lake 2022
