Hello, Goodbye, Hello

In a dream she came to me,
spirit found within.
To sing so deep into my heart,
it’s time now to begin.

She sang:

Stand up and look around you now
at life that seems awry.
Stand up and sing and remember dear
that life is one goodbye.
Today we bring the flowers in
the winds they blow so high.
And then we laugh and cry within
as our world just passes by.

Now, if you want to run with me
just let your spirit fly.
Now is the moment to begin
to see life as one goodbye.
So, if you want to dance with me
and let your love feel free,
then watch the past just drift away
and dance through eternity.

In a dream, she came to me
Spirit found within,
to sing so deep within my heart,
it’s time now to begin.

For life it brings us many hello’s
that shift to long goodbyes.
Some sudden and some unknown
that take us by surprise.
Within it all we feel our grief
then trust and step ahead.
And sing out from within our hearts
and dance until we rest.

So, stand up strong and sing along,
hello, goodbye, hello.
Feel the peace alive within
as we accept what we have known.
We hold it all within our hearts
with gratitude now grown,
and sing with joy now to release,
our spirit, free to roam.

  1. Janis, I feel your poem is beautifully heartfelt, with a gentle rhythm that makes the message of resilience and release flow so naturally.

    Much love,
    David

    1. Thank you so much David for sharing your experience. Singing duo Fendrick and Peck are going to be putting it to music in the ‘gentle’ rhythm that it came to me in my dream. They are on tour right now, but I hope to have something to share in a few months.
      Hugs and love,
      Janis

    1. Thank you Maggie! I am so happy it touched your heart. It is being put to music and I hope to have a recording to share in a few months. 🥰

    1. Thank you so much, VJ. I hope to share a recording of the song in the future. ❤️

  2. Oh, Janis! What a precious gift of a poem! I needed this one today as I am pre-grieving the imminent empty nest (youngest son will be leaving this summer for PhD grad school in physics … in Texas), and processing aging and mortality, my own and both mothers. Also, if I’m honest with myself, as I must be, still grieving the end of my 23-year marriage. So many hellos, goodbyes, hellos! I love and appreciate you. 🙏✨❤️ Sage

    1. Oh, dear Sage, it is good to hear from you and I feel gratitude for your appreciation of the poem and for sharing your experience at this time. It came as a precious gift in a dream I woke from and I quickly captured the song on paper. I am so happy to share it here and the music duo Fendrick and Peck are taking the tune it arrived in and adapting it to violin, guitar, and mandolin, whichever instruments get called in. It will be a few months as they are on tour now but I am excited to hear what they create. Big hugs to you Sage as you move through this liminal time of letting go and moving into new. You have been a gift to me in publishing my book. Hugs and love to you my friend. Peace of heart to you. 🥰
