Learning to Fly

Our hearts said goodbye
now your body is ash
resting in the ground
with me left to ponder
your spirit found.
Through all the years
I still say hello
when I see you at ease
in an empty chair, or
I play with a deck of cards,
and eat an apple pie
that I prepare.
I laugh at your jokes
remember the pain
in not feeling understood
then perceive your presence in love,
care, concern, and all that is good.
There was no goodbye
merely a shift in perspective
now that your spirit found freedom
and learned to fly.

“Death is nothing but a stairway to birth. Nothing that lives ever dies. It only changes form.”

Guru Nanak

A monk said to Tozan, “A monk has died; where has he gone?” Tozan answered, “After the fire, a sprout of grass.”

Zen Master Tozan Ryokai

“First, you have to look, and when you look closely enough, something happens — a tiny shift in perspective occurs. Images once hidden become apparent, and you can’t help but wonder what changed and why you didn’t recognize them before.”
