The Door of My Heart

Waikoloa Pond by Janis Dehler

Starting at my back, she
rocked, kneaded, pressed,
stretched, loosening tension,
releasing stress, removing
Russia, Ukraine, political
exhaustion, Armageddon,
the totality of a world gone
angry, suspicious, moving
toward the brink in environment,
water, air, and confusion.

Moving to my head, she
rubbed, palpated, scratched
and pressed. My inner eye watched
pink rose petals falling around,
a flow of love and compassion filling
vacated spaces, reminding me
that hate and love are close cousins,
joy and sadness reside in the same house,
hope is never far from despair,
light and dark reflect each other.

Rising from the table,
I stood taller; sunlight arrived
after a gray morning. The door
of my heart felt open, realigned,
centered, focused. I felt gravity
grounding me, life pulsing
beneath my feet. Mindful that
nothing changed beyond me.
Allowing life to flow through
makes all the difference

The Sounds of Silence

The pleasure of
this day is found

doing laundry
reading a book

a cup of tea
without conversation

filled with the sound
of life’s orchestra

a washing machine
the twitter of bird

a car passing by
sounds of silence

allowing my mind
to rest in a field

a peaceful wave
a gentle drift

a return to the
soul of self

the center of being
in body

in this day.

“I have learned silence from the talkative, tolerance from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet, strange, I am ungrateful to those teachers.”

Khalil Gibran

“Everything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learn, whatever state I may be in, therein to be content.”

Helen Keller

“The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls and whispered in the sounds of silence.”

Paul Simon

The Quiet Space of Healing

Recovering from a respiratory infection, I reflect on the reality that we are not our bodies, yet when illness comes, we believe that is all we are, fearing that discomfort will not end, we grieve the now smallness of living. As Lao-Tzu offers, health, contentment, and confidence go hand in hand. Our lack of good health leaves us feeling vulnerable, disoriented, and uncertain.

While in my quiet space of healing, I take the time to cry for the innocents murdered in yet another shooting, catch up on the riveting January 6 hearings, order a t-shirt that reads “VOTE/WE’RE RUTHLESS, and soak in a warm bubble bath while listening to the chants of Krishna Das.

Sound touches us deeply. We know that this too is what we seek, a return to our own unique vibration. Home within.

Hear the songbird trill
Breathe the scent of new mown grass
Lay down your weapons!

“One good thing about music is that when it hits you, you feel no pain.”

Bob Marley

“If it is well with your belly, chest and feet, the wealth of kings can give you nothing more.”

Horace, 65-8 BC, Roman poet

“Health is the greatest possession. Contentment is the greatest treasure. Confidence is the greatest friend.”

Lao-Tzu, 6th Cent, BC, Chinese philosopher
